One year after the global pandemic, Amazon and Google are pushing for a return to the office. People have been working from home since March 2020, when the pandemic spread uncontrollably around the world. Speculators speculated that the worldwide experiential field of remote business would revolutionize the labour economy. Of course, Big Tech, who pioneered the digital frontier, seemed ready to lead the charge.
In May 2020, Silicon Valley leaders said on Facebook, Twitter, and Square that their employees could decide to work indefinitely from home if they wished. In the beginning, Google faced one of the longest timetables for returning to the office, but now, a year after the global pandemic, the situation is different.
Google, a search engine giant, said it will speed up plans to reopen offices for those who volunteer before the September 1 deadline in April, according to a CNBC report. The company, which took first place in the "hybrid" workweek schedule last year, also reportedly said that after September 1, employees who want to work remotely for more than 14 days a year must formally apply for it and request it. up to 12 months for exceptional circumstances.
According to the American portal Business Insider, other Google employees reacted to the post by saying that they would find another job if this technology company forced them to stop working from home. For example, Google's technical manager Justin Beckworth responded to the tweet by saying that he currently manages employees from home offices in eight cities in five different time zones and sees no reason why he should return to the office. In addition, according to Business Insider, some workers simply moved away during the pandemic and did not expect to ever commute to work again. According to him, these are mainly people in the age group of around thirty-forty.
Employees addressed by the Business Insider portal have also reportedly noticed recently that several companies now emphasize the possibility of working remotely in job advertisements. After all, other technological giants are playing with a permanent home office, who also sent their people out of their offices last spring to quell the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, Amazon, another Grand Tech grandmaster, said its post-pandemic goal would be "an office-oriented culture as our starting point," and will begin bringing back the company's employees in June. He expects most domestic workers to return to the building in early autumn.
This report is hardly shocking given the fact that both Amazon and Google have been devouring real estate in the last year. Seattle-based Amazon signed a lease for a multi-million-square-foot tower in Bellevue, Washington, last August, and in February unveiled a spectacular depiction of its futuristic second helix headquarters to be built in Arlington, Virginia, by 2025. In March, Google revealed that it is investing $ 7 billion this year in office space and data centres nationwide, including $ 1 billion in its home state of California.
However, another technological titanium, IBM, is moving in a different direction. Bloomberg's CEO said 80% of employees are likely to remain in hybrid roles, with most spending about three days a week in the office after the pandemic.
